Manual Lymphatic Drainage During Pregnancy: What San Antonio Moms Should Know
There may come a point in pregnancy when your ankles seem to disappear by the end of the day, your rings feel a little too snug, or your legs just feel...heavy.
Swelling is common during pregnancy, especially as pregnancy progresses. And while it can be part of the common changes happening in your body, that doesn't mean it always feels good.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized technique that supports the movement of lymphatic fluid through the body. For pregnant mothers experiencing swelling, heaviness, or fluid retention, it may offer another supportive option—and it's quite different from traditional prenatal massage.
Why Does Swelling Happen During Pregnancy?
During pregnancy, your blood and body fluid volume increases to support you and your growing baby. As your uterus grows, it can also put additional pressure on the blood vessels in your pelvis and legs, making it harder for fluid to travel back up from your lower body.
Add gravity, warmer weather, or a long day on your feet, and you may notice more swelling—especially in your feet, ankles, and legs.
What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
MLD uses very light, slow, rhythmic movements to encourage lymphatic fluid to move through the body's lymphatic pathways. Unlike traditional massage, it isn't focused on working muscles or using deeper pressure.
If you're expecting something that feels like a massage, MLD may surprise you! There's no deep pressure or working on trigger points, and many clients find the repetitive movements incredibly relaxing.
During prenatal MLD at Nurture, you'll remain face-up and comfortably supported with bolsters and positioning adjustments appropriate for pregnancy.
Can MLD Help With Pregnancy Swelling?
For some mothers, it may.
Research on MLD during pregnancy is still limited, but the studies we do have are encouraging. MLD has been associated with reductions in lower-leg swelling and improvements in symptoms such as heaviness, discomfort, and tingling in pregnant women experiencing pregnancy-related edema.
MLD isn't meant to eliminate all pregnancy swelling, and every body will respond differently. But for appropriate clients, it may be one supportive option for feeling a little more comfortable in your body.
Prenatal Massage or MLD: Which One Should I Book?
It really depends on what you're hoping to get from your session.
If you're dealing with muscle tension, low back or hip pain, general pregnancy aches, or simply want the relaxation and hands-on care of massage, prenatal massage may be the better fit.
If your main concern is swelling, fluid retention, puffiness, or heavy-feeling legs, Manual Lymphatic Drainage may be worth considering.
You may even benefit from both at different points in pregnancy. They aren't competing treatments—they simply have different goals.
And if you aren't sure which one to book, reach out. We're always happy to help you decide.
Is MLD Safe During Pregnancy?
For many healthy pregnancies, MLD can be a gentle option for supporting pregnancy-related swelling and discomfort. However, your health history and what's happening in your pregnancy matter. Haley reviews your intake before your first session, and there may be circumstances when we'll ask you to check with your prenatal provider before receiving MLD.
It's also important to remember that not all pregnancy swelling is typical. Sudden or significant swelling—particularly in your face or hands—or swelling accompanied by a persistent headache, vision changes, difficulty breathing, or pain, redness, or swelling in one leg deserves a call to your prenatal provider.
If something about your swelling feels unusual or concerning, check with your provider first. MLD is supportive care, not a substitute for medical care.
